About Exotel MCP

Exotel-hosted MCP server connects AI clients to Exotel voice calling, VoiceBots, SMS, Conversation Quality Analytics, and account operations.

What you can use it for

  • Place and monitor voice calls, including VoiceBot calls
  • Send single or bulk SMS and inspect delivery status
  • Retrieve transcripts and run Conversation Quality Analytics
  • Inspect account number metadata

Transport

Endpoint

Authentication
Required Authorization JSON header with product-specific credentials. Official security guide says no OAuth or per-tool scopes; a valid header can access all configured product tools. Use separate keys/accounts for isolation.

Requirements

  • Active Exotel account with API credentials, Account SID, and an enabled Exotel number
  • Node.js 18+ and mcp-remote for the documented Claude Desktop setup
  • Choose regional API domain: India https://api.in.exotel.com or global https://api.exotel.com
  • Account balance/outbound calling enabled for call workflows; SMS may require registration/templates in applicable regions

Setup steps

  1. Install mcp-remote using npm install -g mcp-remote, as documented by Exotel.
  2. Retrieve API key/secret, Account SID, and Exotel number from the official Exotel dashboard; store secrets locally and never paste real values into chat.
  3. Set the remote MCP URL https://mcp.exotel.com/mcp and required Authorization JSON header through the client
  4. Restart/reload the client and confirm the tools appear. First verify using a harmless read-only account or call-status lookup. Require explicit human approval before calls, SMS, or paid actions.
Tools 2+

Official Available Tools guide has 25 functional operations across voice calls (5), VoiceBot (9), SMS (4), CQA (5), and account/setup (2). It describes these operations in natural language but does not publish stable JSON tool identifiers in the fetched reference. The two stored names are examples confirmed by the quick-start, not a complete list. Hosted tools/list returned 401 without an Authorization header; exact runtime names require an authorized account.

  • voice_call_initiate

Name shown in Exotel Quick Start as an outbound call tool; inventory is partial.

    01
  • voicebot_place_call

Name shown in Exotel Quick Start for a VoiceBot agentic call; inventory is partial.

    02

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • The docs describe 25 functional operations but exact MCP identifiers/schemas are not published in the current public reference; tools/list requires credentials. Do not infer identifiers from prose.
  • Tools can place calls, send SMS, configure VoiceBots, and ingest/query call recordings/transcripts. Credentials and data should be product scoped.
