About Slack MCP Server (Official)

Slack-hosted MCP service that lets compatible AI clients search Slack messages and files, read and manage conversations, users, canvases, lists, and perform other Slack actions according to the app's granted scopes.

What you can use it for

  • Search messages across accessible channels and conversations
  • Find Slack files and users
  • Read and send messages, manage conversations, reactions, canvases, lists, and file uploads where granted
Connection and setup
Hosting
Remote, vendor-hosted
Transport
Streamable HTTP
Endpoint
https://mcp.slack.com/mcp
Authentication
Confidential OAuth for a registered Slack app with fixed client ID and client secret. User consent authorizes access. Partner-built clients can offer a ready-made connection. Only Slack Marketplace-published or internal apps may use the server; workspace admin approval may be needed.

Requirements

  • Slack workspace and account
  • A registered Slack app with a fixed app ID for general/custom clients; unlisted apps are not eligible
  • Required app scopes and any workspace-admin approval
  • Supported MCP client; browser for OAuth consent

Setup steps

  1. For an existing supported partner client, add Slack from that client's integration catalog and complete Slack OAuth.
  2. For a custom client, register or reuse an eligible Slack app, enable MCP, configure client credentials and the relevant user OAuth scopes, then add https://mcp.slack.com/mcp using Streamable HTTP.
  3. Complete browser consent and workspace approval if requested.
  4. Verify available tools reflect granted scopes; do not assume all features are enabled.
Tools 2+

Slack documents many functions and scope mappings but not one fixed complete tools/list. These two stored upload tools are a partial sample; actual tools depend on workspace, OAuth scopes and permission grants.

  • slack_get_file_upload_url

Get an upload URL for a file.

    01
  • slack_complete_file_upload

    Complete a file upload.

    02

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • No SSE transport or Dynamic Client Registration documented.
  • Requires an eligible app identity; unlisted apps cannot use MCP.
  • Tool access depends on user scopes, workspace policies, permissions, and client implementation.
  • Rate limits apply by feature/action; consult the current official rate-limit table.
  • Configured IP allowlists also apply to MCP requests.
