About Square MCP Server (Beta)

Square's beta MCP server exposes discovery tools that let an AI inspect Square API methods and schemas, then call Square APIs for customers, orders, catalog, payments, and other services.

What you can use it for

  • Discover Square API methods and request schemas.
  • Query or manage Square data through the API, including customers, catalog, orders and payment-related services.
Connection and setup
Hosting
Both remote hosted and local
Transport
Streamable HTTP (hosted); stdio (local)
Endpoint
https://mcp.squareup.com/mcp
Authentication
Remote server uses OAuth login to a Square account with granular scope consent. Local server accepts a Square access token via ACCESS_TOKEN; the repository setup supports SANDBOX=true for sandbox calls.

Requirements

  • A Square account for OAuth or a Square access token for local setup.
  • Remote server is beta and accesses production resources; test against Square Sandbox using local setup before production.
  • Local setup requires Node.js/npm through the documented npx command.

Setup steps

  1. Recommended remote setup: add https://mcp.squareup.com/mcp in a client supporting remote Streamable HTTP and OAuth, then authenticate with Square and approve only needed scopes.
  2. For local sandbox setup, configure `npx square-mcp-server start` with `ACCESS_TOKEN` and `SANDBOX=true`; follow the official access-token guide and keep the token out of chat/config committed to source control.
  3. Use `get_service_info`, then `get_type_info`, then `make_api_request` to explore and execute an API operation.
  4. Use a harmless read-only query first; the local server supports `DISALLOW_WRITES=true` to block writes.
Tools 3

Square exposes three generic tools: get_service_info, get_type_info and make_api_request. They dynamically access the much larger Square API, subject to OAuth scopes; remote server is beta.

  • get_service_info

Discover methods available for a Square API service.

    01
  • get_type_info

Get detailed parameter requirements for an API type.

    02
  • make_api_request

Execute an API request through a Square service.

    03
Limitations and notes
  • The service is explicitly in Beta.
  • Remote hosted endpoint differs between the current Square developer docs (`/mcp`) and repository README (`/sse`); this record follows the current developer documentation and retains repository evidence for review.
  • The hosted server is production-only; local sandbox should be used to evaluate prompts before production.
  • The make_api_request tool can perform writes; use least-privilege scopes or DISALLOW_WRITES for local setup.
Source discrepancies
  • The official developer docs show https://mcp.squareup.com/mcp; the repository README still shows https://mcp.squareup.com/sse. Prefer the current developer docs endpoint; verify if clients using /sse remain supported.
Original sources
  • official tool reference

Square official README lists the three generic tools get_service_info, get_type_info, make_api_request. These discover and call the much broader Square API; server remains beta and OAuth scopes gate production access.
