About CoinStats MCP

CoinStats? hosted MCP connects AI clients to live crypto prices and market metrics, wallet balances and history, DeFi positions, exchange data, portfolio P/L, and crypto news.

What you can use it for

  • Look up current and historical crypto prices and market data
  • Review a user's CoinStats portfolio and P/L
  • Inspect wallet balances, transactions, and DeFi positions across supported chains
  • Compare exchange tickers and summarize crypto news
Connection and setup
Hosting
Remote hosted OAuth server; optional local stdio/Docker developer mode
Transport
Streamable HTTP; local developer package uses stdio
Endpoint
https://mcp.coinstats.app/mcp
Authentication
Hosted endpoint uses OAuth 2.1 with PKCE and Dynamic Client Registration; users sign in at CoinStats and approve access. Alternative self-hosted mode uses COINSTATS_API_KEY.

Requirements

  • CoinStats account to use the hosted OAuth server
  • MCP client supporting Streamable HTTP and OAuth 2.1
  • API credits apply to calls; wallet and DeFi operations cost more than market data

Setup steps

  1. For Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http coinstats https://mcp.coinstats.app/mcp, then run /mcp and sign in.
  2. For Codex: codex mcp add coinstats --url https://mcp.coinstats.app/mcp, then codex mcp login coinstats.
  3. For Cursor or VS Code, add the remote URL as an HTTP MCP server; sign in when prompted. For Claude Desktop/Claude.ai use Settings ? Connectors ? Add custom connector and authorize CoinStats.
  4. Complete OAuth consent in the browser. Verify with a read-only request such as current BTC price or a wallet balance for a public address.
  5. For headless/self-hosted usage only, use the documented npm package @coinstats/coinstats-mcp with COINSTATS_API_KEY stored in environment secrets.

Limitations and notes
  • The hosted service reads portfolio/account data after user approval. It cannot sign transactions, trade, or move crypto funds.
  • Portfolio mutations include adding a transaction, connecting a wallet/exchange, syncing, and irreversible portfolio deletion; require explicit user confirmation for destructive actions.
  • API credit multipliers vary by operation; official docs state wallet actions use 40?50 credits and DeFi data 400 credits.
  • Hosted OAuth and local API-key mode are different implementations/setup paths.
