About Zread MCP

Hosted code-research MCP for searching repository documentation, inspecting repository structure, and reading source files.

What you can use it for

  • Understand a repository's purpose, workflows, and recent context through repository documentation search.
  • Inspect directory structure before selecting files to read.
  • Read a source file for implementation analysis or code review.
Connection and setup
Hosting
Remote, hosted by Z.AI
Transport
Streamable HTTP; SSE is also documented
Endpoint
https://api.z.ai/api/mcp/zread/mcp
Authentication
Bearer token from a GLM Coding Plan; configure the token locally as ZAI_API_KEY or in the client's protected Authorization header. The documentation says access currently requires a purchased GLM Coding Plan.

Requirements

  • A GLM Coding Plan and its API token.
  • A compatible remote MCP client supporting Streamable HTTP or SSE.
  • Internet access to the Z.AI hosted server.

Setup steps

  1. Purchase or confirm access to a GLM Coding Plan and obtain its token from the official GLM plan page.
  2. Add the Streamable HTTP endpoint https://api.z.ai/api/mcp/zread/mcp and configure Authorization: Bearer <ZAI_API_KEY>; use the SSE endpoint only where required by the client.
  3. For Claude Code, the official page gives `claude mcp add -s user -t http zread https://api.z.ai/api/mcp/zread/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer <TOKEN>"`.
  4. Complete any client-side connection step, then verify with a repository documentation search.
  5. Keep the token in the client's local secret store or protected environment; do not paste it into chat.
Tools 3

Zread official docs list exactly search_doc, get_repo_structure and read_file; GLM Coding Plan token required.

  • search_doc

Search repository documentation, code, and comments; identifier conflicts with `doc_search` shown elsewhere in the official guide.

    01
  • get_repo_structure

Inspect the structure of a GitHub repository or subdirectory.

    02
  • read_file

Read the contents of a file in a GitHub repository.

    03
Limitations and notes
  • Requires a paid GLM Coding Plan according to the Zread MCP guide; usage is billed by request with quotas described in the current plan terms.
  • The docs show conflicting names for the repository search tool (`search_doc` vs `doc_search`).
  • Zread is a hosted public-cloud service; the documentation says separate enterprise/private deployments are not offered currently.
Source discrepancies
  • Official documentation shows both search_doc and doc_search for the same repository search tool.
Original sources
  • official tool reference

Official Zread page lists exactly search_doc, get_repo_structure and read_file. GLM Coding Plan token is required and usage is billed by request count.
