About Context7 MCP

Finds current, version-aware library documentation and code examples, then returns relevant context to an AI client.

What you can use it for

  • Retrieve current documentation for a named library
  • Look up version-specific API details and examples
  • Resolve an ambiguous library name to a Context7 library ID
Connection and setup
Hosting
Remote hosted endpoint or local stdio package
Transport
Streamable HTTP (remote); stdio (local)
Endpoint
https://mcp.context7.com/mcp
Authentication
Hosted remote OAuth endpoint is https://mcp.context7.com/mcp/oauth. The standard remote endpoint accepts a bearer API key; a key is documented as optional for higher rate limits and private repositories. Local stdio uses CONTEXT7_API_KEY or --api-key when a key is needed.

Requirements

  • Node.js 20.18.1 or newer for the local package
  • An MCP-compatible client
  • Context7 account/API key for higher rate limits or private-repository access

Setup steps

  1. For hosted use, add https://mcp.context7.com/mcp to a remote MCP client; use the /mcp/oauth endpoint if the client will authenticate with OAuth.
  2. For local stdio use npx -y @upstash/context7-mcp, adding --api-key and a locally stored key when needed.
  3. Reload the client, then resolve a library ID before querying its documentation unless the exact Context7 library ID is already known.
Tools 2

The current official client guide and server source identify resolve-library-id and query-docs as the two registered tools.

  • resolve-library-id

Resolve a library name and query intent to a Context7-compatible library ID and available versions.

    Parameters: libraryName (required), query (required)
    01
  • query-docs

Fetch relevant documentation context and code examples for a library.

Parameters: libraryId (required), query (required), language (optional)
    02
Limitations and notes
  • Local stdio and remote OAuth have different authentication requirements; OAuth is only documented for remote HTTP connections.
  • The private backend, parsing engine, and crawler are not included in the public source repository.
Source discrepancies
  • The package README currently contains older get-library-docs tool wording in some sections. The current all-clients guide and current v2 changelog name query-docs; the page uses the current guide's names.
