About Chrome DevTools MCP

Google's Chrome DevTools MCP connects an AI coding agent to a live Chrome browser for browser automation, debugging, network inspection, performance analysis, and related DevTools workflows.

What you can use it for

  • Automate browser input and navigation
  • Inspect console, CSS, and network requests
  • Capture screenshots and snapshots
  • Record/analyze browser performance
  • Inspect heap memory; optional extension/PWA/experimental categories

Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
No service credential is documented for the default local server. It controls a Chrome instance; if connected to an existing signed-in browser, the agent can access and act on that session.

Requirements

  • Node.js latest LTS and npm
  • Current stable Chrome
  • MCP-compatible client

Setup steps

  1. Default setup: configure command npx and args [-y, chrome-devtools-mcp@latest].
  2. For Codex, Google documents codex mcp add chrome-devtools -- npx chrome-devtools-mcp@latest. Gemini CLI documentation also provides gemini mcp add chrome-devtools npx chrome-devtools-mcp@latest.
  3. The server starts its own Chrome instance by default. Only connect to an existing browser with explicit user awareness: the agent inherits that browser's active session, cookies, and page access.
  4. Reload the client and verify with a harmless page inspection or the documented performance check.
Tools 59

The current reference documents 59 exact names across default and optional categories. Category flags, browser configuration, and experimental features control availability; this is not a fixed universally exposed count.

Limitations and notes
  • MCP grants the agent access to browser content and can let it interact with active sessions; avoid connecting to sensitive logged-in profiles.
  • Extension and experimental third-party/WebMCP tool categories require flags; the available catalog depends on configuration.
  • Requires local Chrome and Node.js.
  • The browser may visit untrusted web content; treat page contents as untrusted data.
