About WhatsApp MCP (community)

A community-maintained local MCP server that links a personal WhatsApp account, stores message history in a local SQLite database, and exposes contact, message, chat, media, and message-sending tools.

What you can use it for

  • Search personal WhatsApp contacts and messages
  • Read chat history and media
  • Send messages and media through a linked WhatsApp account
Connection and setup
Hosting
Local Go bridge plus local Python MCP process
Transport
stdio
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
Link a personal WhatsApp account by scanning the bridge's QR code with WhatsApp on the phone. The README says periodic re-authentication may be required, approximately every 20 days.

Requirements

  • Go and Python 3.6+ as stated by the repository README.
  • uv Python package manager.
  • FFmpeg is optional and used for converting media to playable WhatsApp voice-message format.
  • On Windows, the Go SQLite dependency requires CGO enabled and a C compiler such as the documented MSYS2 toolchain.

Setup steps

  1. Clone https://github.com/lharries/whatsapp-mcp.
  2. Start the Go bridge from `whatsapp-bridge` with `go run main.go`; scan the displayed QR code using WhatsApp on the intended phone account's Linked Devices flow.
  3. Configure the MCP client to launch `uv --directory <absolute path to the cloned repository>/whatsapp-mcp-server run main.py` using stdio.
  4. Keep the Go bridge running alongside the MCP server, reconnect the client, and inspect tools/list. Re-authenticate by scanning a new QR code if the linked session expires.
  5. For Windows, enable CGO and install the compiler prerequisites described in the repository README before starting the Go bridge.

The README lists 12 tools; this record captures all 12 names, but does not claim a live authenticated tools/list was observed.

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • This is a community integration using the WhatsApp Web multidevice API; it is not made or supported by WhatsApp/Meta.
  • All linked-account message history is stored in a local SQLite database; protect that database and linked session credentials.
  • The repository warns that malicious content in messages can lead to private-data exfiltration through prompt injection.
  • The integration can send messages and files. Do not use these mutating tools as connection smoke tests; require explicit user intent before sending.
  • The README says linked-account re-authentication may be needed after approximately 20 days.
  • No MCP initialize, tools/list, or representative tool call was performed for this catalog entry.
Original sources
  • Community maintainer repository README

Documents the local Go bridge and Python MCP process, Go/Python/uv prerequisites, QR authentication, stdio configuration, SQLite storage, all 12 tool names, Windows CGO constraint, and prompt-injection warning.

  • Official WhatsApp product site and logo asset

The WhatsApp official site links its standalone SVG product icon; the SVG has only local path/style elements, was decoded and visually reviewed on light/dark contact sheets. It is used only as product identity; publisher is explicitly marked community.

  • maintainer or vendor tool reference

Original lharries README tool catalog lists 12 tools; alternate forks add features and must not be merged into this server inventory.
