About Tavily MCP

Tavily's MCP server gives AI agents real-time web search, URL extraction, site mapping, and crawling through remote or local connections.

What you can use it for

  • Search web results for current information
  • Extract content from specified URLs
  • Map and crawl websites
  • Run deeper research workflows when authenticated
Connection and setup
Hosting
Remote hosted or local
Transport
Streamable HTTP (remote); stdio (local)
Endpoint
https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp/
Authentication
Supports OAuth browser authorization or Tavily API key via Authorization: Bearer header or tavilyApiKey query parameter. Keyless local mode supports only search and extract. Avoid putting a secret in a URL when protected headers are supported.

Requirements

  • Tavily account/API key for authenticated and full tool access
  • For local mode: Node.js 20 or later
  • MCP client supporting remote Streamable HTTP or local stdio

Setup steps

  1. Remote: add https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp/ and complete OAuth when prompted, or provide the Tavily API key via a protected Bearer header.
  2. Local: configure command npx, args -y tavily-mcp@latest, env TAVILY_API_KEY=<secret placeholder>.
  3. Optional defaults can be set with DEFAULT_PARAMETERS; do not put credentials in shared project config.
  4. Verify with a low-impact search. Keyless mode only supports search/extract; additional tools require API key.

Limitations and notes
  • Tavily API usage is associated with the API key/account; check current plan and limits.
  • Without a key, local server exposes only search and extract, while other operations return an API-key-required response.
  • Query-string API keys may appear in logs or copied configuration; use OAuth or protected headers when possible.
