About Storybook MCP Addon

Storybook preview MCP addon gives agents access to local component documentation/manifests, story authoring and previews, and component tests; currently in preview.

What you can use it for

  • Inspect a project's component APIs and stories
  • Generate or validate stories using the project's documented components
  • Run Storybook development and testing workflows from an MCP client
Connection and setup
Hosting

Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
Local development server; no external hosted endpoint documented.

Requirements

  • An existing Storybook project and the @storybook/addon-mcp package.
  • The running Storybook dev server; component documentation tools additionally depend on framework support and the components manifest.

Setup steps

  1. In the Storybook project root, run the documented installer `npx storybook add @storybook/addon-mcp` and review the resulting project changes.
  2. For frameworks that generate a components manifest, enable `features.componentsManifest` in `.storybook/main.ts` if component-doc tools are needed. React frameworks, Angular Vite, and Vue 3 Vite are documented; other frameworks still provide development and testing tools without this manifest.
  3. Start Storybook with the project's normal dev command. The default local MCP route is `http://localhost:6006/mcp`; use the actual port and configured endpoint path for that project.
  4. For Codex, add the Streamable HTTP URL through the Codex MCP UI or `[mcp_servers.storybook]` in `~/.codex/config.toml`, then reload Codex and inspect its MCP tool list. The tools depend on the running Storybook, installed toolsets, and framework capabilities.
Tools 9+
