About Serena MCP Toolkit

Open-source coding MCP toolkit for symbol-level code retrieval, editing, refactoring, diagnostics, and optional long-lived memory; supports language-server and JetBrains backends.

What you can use it for

  • Semantic code retrieval and symbol navigation
  • Understand code structure and project relationships
  • Edit code through project-scoped coding tools
Connection and setup
Hosting
local
Transport
stdio
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
No external credentials documented for local stdio use.

Requirements

  • uv package manager
  • Python 3.13 selected by the documented installation command
  • Project directory Serena can access
  • Additional language-server dependencies may be needed for selected languages

Setup steps

  1. Install Serena using `uv tool install -p 3.13 serena-agent`, then run `serena init` in the intended project.
  2. Configure the MCP client using the official Codex command `serena setup codex`, or use the documented stdio command `serena start-mcp-server --project-from-cwd --context=codex`.
  3. Reload the client and confirm Serena appears in /mcp. Inspect tool descriptions and project context before allowing edits.
  4. Use read-only symbol/search operations first; approve code modifications only after reviewing the target project and patch.
Tools 6+

Six exact basic utility names documented by the maintainer. Serena is configurable: enabled names depend on backend, modes, client context, and user configuration, so this is not a complete default roster.

    Regex search across the project.

    01
  • replace_content

    Regex or literal text replacement.

    02
  • list_dir

    List directory contents.

    03
  • find_file

    Find project files.

    04
  • read_file

    Read files or file chunks.

    05
  • execute_shell_command

    Run a shell command.

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • Language-server capabilities vary by language; some advanced refactorings and interactive debugging require the JetBrains plugin.
  • Active tools are configurable and can differ by backend and execution mode.
Original sources
  • maintainer client setup

Provides Codex configuration and exact command/arguments for stdio MCP setup; recommends verifying with /mcp.

  • maintainer project logo

The maintained repository contains a dedicated Serena application icon, used as the project logo rather than a generic publisher avatar.

  • maintainer documentation
