About SendGrid MCP Server (community)

Independent community MCP server for SendGrid API v3 email marketing, transactional email, dynamic templates, and analytics; maintained by a SendGrid engineer but not an official SendGrid product.

What you can use it for

  • Review SendGrid email analytics and delivery configuration
  • Manage SendGrid contacts, templates, campaigns, and transactional sending where write mode is enabled
Connection and setup
Hosting
local
Transport
stdio
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
Requires a restricted SendGrid API key in SENDGRID_API_KEY. The server’s HTTP client-auth mode is separate; default READ_ONLY=true blocks write/send tools. Local stdio uses no separate MCP bearer token.

Requirements

  • Node.js 20+ and npm for package setup
  • SendGrid account and API key with only required permissions
  • MCP client supporting stdio

Setup steps

  1. Create a restricted SendGrid API key in the SendGrid dashboard at https://app.sendgrid.com/settings/api_keys; grant only the permissions needed for the chosen use.
  2. Install the community package with `npm install -g sendgrid-mcp` as documented by its README.
  3. Configure the MCP client to run command `sendgrid-mcp` over stdio and supply `SENDGRID_API_KEY` through a protected local environment variable. Keep `READ_ONLY=true` (the documented default) unless write/send actions are explicitly needed.
  4. Reconnect and inspect the tools. Verify using read-only analytics or configuration lookup first; never send mail, edit campaigns, contacts, templates, or settings without explicit user intent.
Tools 4+

The maintainer README reports 154 tools across 22 categories; four exact identifiers shown in the published read-only-safe list are recorded. READ_ONLY=true by default blocks mutations at runtime. This is a community project, not an official SendGrid product.

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • SENDGRID_API_KEY required.
  • READ_ONLY defaults true and blocks write/send operations.
  • HTTP auth and TLS must be configured by the operator.
Original sources
  • official api credential reference

Official Twilio SendGrid page references official API libraries; credential creation and supported API operations remain governed by SendGrid API documentation.
