About Repowise MCP

Repowise indexes a local codebase into a dependency graph with git history, code-health analysis, dead-code findings, and optional generated documentation for an AI coding agent.

What you can use it for

  • Understand a codebase's dependency graph and architecture
  • Find code context and symbols
  • Review git history, code health, and dead code
Connection and setup
Hosting
Self-hosted local process or optional Repowise hosted service
Transport
stdio by default; Streamable HTTP and legacy SSE are documented
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
No API key is required for local index-only mode. Optional model-written documentation requires a provider key or supported local provider; hosted mode uses a Repowise account.

Requirements

  • Python; the official install guide uses pip or uv tool.
  • Run repowise init in the repository to create the local index before starting MCP.

Setup steps

  1. Install with `pip install repowise` or `uv tool install repowise`.
  2. From the target repository, run `repowise init --no-prose -y` for the no-key local index-only setup. Use the interactive `repowise init` if you want optional model-written wiki pages.
  3. Configure the MCP client with command `repowise` and args [`mcp`] using stdio, or use the documented Codex CLI command `codex mcp add repowise -- repowise mcp`.
  4. Restart the client and inspect tools/list. A harmless verification call is `get_overview` for the indexed repository.
Tools 8+

The repository homepage reports eight tools while the configuration reference documents a curated default profile of ten tools for single-repository mode, plus opt-in tools. Tool availability changes by mode and version.

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • An index must be created for a repository before repository-specific tools can return useful results.
  • Semantic search and model-written prose depend on optional embedding or model-provider configuration; index-only mode avoids external model usage.
  • No MCP initialization, tools/list, or representative tool call was performed for this catalog entry.
Source discrepancies
  • The Repowise homepage describes eight MCP tools; the configuration reference documents ten default tools for single-repository mode plus optional tools. Recorded representative tools and marked the inventory dynamic rather than claiming a complete exact count.
Original sources
  • official setup documentation

Documents the local install, no-key index-only mode, repowise init workflow, stdio and Codex CLI setup, verification prompt, optional hosted mode, and optional provider keys.

  • official tool configuration reference

Documents the curated default MCP tool profile and opt-in tool controls, indicating version- and mode-dependent tool availability.

  • verified repository owner avatar

Verified GitHub organization avatar for the canonical Repowise repository, decoded and reviewed on light and dark contact sheets. Selection tier D: repository owner avatar.

  • official or maintainer tool reference

Official MCP overview lists a curated, versioned tool set; current docs distinguish full and lean profiles.
