About Repomix MCP

Repomix packages local or remote code repositories into a consolidated output that AI assistants can inspect, search, and analyze through MCP.

What you can use it for

  • Summarize and analyze local or remote repositories
  • Search packed code and read relevant portions incrementally
  • Inspect codebase structure and selected source content
Connection and setup
Hosting
Local
Transport
stdio
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
No authentication required for local repository access. Remote repository packing may access external repository URLs.

Requirements

  • Node.js/npm or compatible package runner
  • A repository path accessible to the user running Repomix

Setup steps

  1. Configure command `npx` with args `-y`, `repomix`, `--mcp` in the MCP client (the documented VS Code command is `code --add-mcp ...`).
  2. For safer filesystem scope, use `npx -y repomix --mcp --sandbox` or append `--sandbox path/to/project`; this restricts tools to the selected workspace root.
  3. Restart/reload the client and confirm the server is connected. Start by packing only the intended repository and review the resulting output scope.
Tools 6+

The official guide documents pack_codebase, pack_remote_repository, read_repomix_output and grep_repomix_output; two file-system tools are conditional on sandbox mode. Exact registration depends on server options, so this record captures documented variants.

  • pack_codebase

Package a local or remote code directory into a consolidated report.

    01
  • read_repomix_output

Read portions of a Repomix-generated output file.

    02
  • grep_repomix_output

Search a Repomix output using JavaScript regular expressions.

    03
  • file_system_read_file

Read a file; registered in sandbox mode and confined to workspace root.

    04
  • file_system_read_directory

Read a directory listing; registered in sandbox mode and confined to workspace root.

    05
  • pack_remote_repository

Fetch, clone and package a remote GitHub repository into a consolidated output.

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • MCP support is documented as experimental.
  • Without `--sandbox`, filesystem tools can access paths available to the host user; use sandbox for agent scope restrictions.
  • Sandbox is application-level confinement, not an operating-system sandbox.
  • Remote packing may access external repositories; only request repositories intended for analysis.
