About Railway MCP

Connects AI coding clients to Railway projects and hosted infrastructure through Railway's MCP server. The Railway CLI proxy, direct OAuth connection, and in-process local server are distinct connection modes with different tool sets.

What you can use it for

  • Inspect Railway projects, services, environments, deployments and variables
  • Help operate Railway-hosted applications using the account's permissions
Connection and setup
Hosting
Both: Railway-hosted MCP server with CLI stdio proxy, direct remote HTTP OAuth, and in-process local CLI server
Transport
stdio (CLI proxy); Streamable HTTP (direct OAuth)
Endpoint
https://mcp.railway.com
Authentication
CLI login proxy or OAuth.

Requirements

  • Railway account and Railway CLI for CLI/local modes
  • Railway CLI 5.44.0 or later for the default hosted-server proxy
  • An MCP client supporting HTTP OAuth for direct remote mode

Setup steps

  1. Install and authenticate Railway CLI using the official CLI setup guide, then run `railway login`.
  2. Recommended supported-agent setup: run `railway mcp install` (or `railway mcp install --agent codex` for Codex).
  3. For direct remote OAuth, run `railway mcp install --oauth`; the client opens Railway authorization.
  4. For networks that cannot reach the hosted endpoint, run `railway mcp install --local`; this selects the in-process server and its different tool set.
  5. Restart/reload the client if it does not discover the installed configuration. Verify with a read-only request such as listing projects before asking it to change infrastructure.
Tools 11

The hosted Railway MCP lists eleven tools. railway mcp local exposes a distinct local tool set, so counts here apply to the hosted server.

Limitations and notes
  • Railway MCP can perform infrastructure changes; review and explicitly confirm deployment, deletion, or configuration changes.
  • Hosted and local modes expose different tools.
  • CLI proxy requires Railway CLI 5.44.0 or later for the hosted MCP connection.
