About Outlook Local MCP Server (community)

Community-built local MCP server for Outlook calendar, events, email, and related Microsoft Graph workflows. It runs locally, stores OAuth tokens in the OS keychain, and is independent of Microsoft.

What you can use it for

  • List Outlook calendars and events
  • Search/read Outlook mail and event attachments
  • Prepare calendar drafts and, if allowed, create/update/delete events
  • Optionally read contacts or Teams messages/transcripts
Connection and setup
Hosting
Local process; optional Docker image
Transport
stdio
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
Microsoft Graph OAuth browser flow. Uses Microsoft Office client ID by default and `common` tenant; user signs in via browser. Access tokens are cached in the OS keychain. Optional Contacts and Teams tools request additional scopes only when enabled.

Requirements

  • Go 1.25+ to build/install, or supported release/Claude extension/Docker image
  • Microsoft personal, work, or school account
  • MCP client capable of launching local stdio process
  • Windows users should use the documented Windows release zip or extension; the Claude plugin supports macOS/Linux only

Setup steps

  1. Install/build with `go install github.com/desek/outlook-local-mcp/cmd/outlook-local-mcp@latest`, or use an upstream release binary appropriate to the OS.
  2. Configure the MCP client to launch the built `outlook-local-mcp` binary over stdio. For Windows use the upstream Windows release instructions rather than the Claude plugin.
  3. On first use, the server opens Microsoft login in the browser. Sign in; when the browser displays a blank page, copy the full callback URL from the address bar and provide it to the server as its local authentication flow requests.
  4. Verify using the documented `system` `about` operation (no account data) and then a harmless calendar list. Keep `OUTLOOK_MCP_READ_ONLY=true` for initial use; the documented default allows write tools.
  5. Enable Contacts or Teams only when required; each option adds its documented Graph read scopes and requires incremental consent.
Tools 6+

Six top-level capability tools are stored; each may dispatch multiple operations, so this is not a count of every underlying action.

  • calendar

Aggregate calendar operations such as listing calendars/events and event management.

    01
  • mail

Aggregate email reading, searching, and draft workflows.

    02
  • account

    Account operations.

    03
  • system

Server status, help, and embedded documentation.

    04
  • contacts

    Optional read-only contact/person lookup; requires OUTLOOK_MCP_CONTACTS_ENABLED.

    05
  • teams

    Optional read-only Teams search/read; requires OUTLOOK_MCP_TEAMS_ENABLED.

    06

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • Community project; it is not a Microsoft product or service commitment.
  • The README default `OUTLOOK_MCP_READ_ONLY=false` exposes create/update/delete/cancel operations; enable read-only mode for initial use.
  • The Claude plugin’s documented binary support is macOS/Linux; Windows users need the release zip or extension instructions.
  • Some Graph data and scopes may require Microsoft organizational consent or account eligibility.
