About Oracle Cloud Database Tools MCP

OCI-managed MCP service connects a client to an Oracle Database Tools connection and exposes server-specific built-in SQL, custom SQL/PLSQL, reports, and optional NL2SQL toolsets.

What you can use it for

  • Oracle database introspection
  • Database tools and reports
  • Approved custom SQL/PLSQL workflows
Connection and setup
Hosting
OCI managed service
Transport
Streamable HTTP
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
OAuth 2.0 through OCI IAM Identity Domains; server-specific roles authorize toolsets.

Requirements

  • OCI tenancy, compartment, identity domain, Database Tools connection, and required IAM policies.
  • Create an OCI Database Tools MCP Server resource and configure access roles.
  • Oracle database access via the configured Database Tools connection.

Setup steps

  1. In OCI Console, open Developer Services → Database Tools → Model Context Protocol Servers and create a server.
  2. Select the compartment, connection, identity domain, display name, storage, and assigned roles as required by the vendor setup flow.
  3. Copy the unique MCP endpoint and generated client configuration from the MCP server details.
  4. Configure an MCP client for Streamable HTTP and complete OCI Identity OAuth or the configured PAT flow.
  5. Inspect the available tools and use least-privilege IAM policies; begin with read-only database operations.
Tools 6+

Official OCI docs publish six exact tool names for built-in SQL and customizable reporting toolsets. The effective tools depend on which toolsets are enabled, IAM roles, and any custom SQL tools defined on the account; this is a documented partial inventory, not a universal complete tools/list result.

  • sql_run

Executes SQL queries in the connected Oracle database.

    01
  • schema_information

Provides detailed insights about a specified database schema by analyzing and enriching metadata returned from executed queries.

    02
  • request_status

Retrieves the current status and final result of a previously submitted asynchronous tool call.

    03
  • report_list

Retrieves the list of predefined reports available for execution.

    04
  • report_execute

Executes a predefined report and returns its results.

    05
  • report_sql

Retrieves the underlying SQL query for a predefined report.

    06

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • Requires OCI Database Tools connection, managed MCP server, and Identity Domain roles.
  • Custom SQL and PL/SQL tools can execute operations on the connected database; grant narrowly scoped roles.
