About OpenAI Docs MCP

OpenAI-hosted, read-only documentation server for searching and reading OpenAI developer documentation across developers.openai.com, platform.openai.com, and learn.chatgpt.com. It does not invoke the OpenAI API.

Requirements

  • MCP-capable client with remote HTTP support or a documented stdio bridge

Setup steps

  1. Add https://developers.openai.com/mcp to a client that supports remote HTTP MCP.
  2. For Codex, run codex mcp add openaiDeveloperDocs --url https://developers.openai.com/mcp, then codex mcp list.
  3. For Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http openaiDeveloperDocs https://developers.openai.com/mcp, then claude mcp list.
  4. For Cursor, add the URL in ~/.cursor/mcp.json under mcpServers; restart Cursor after editing.
  5. For VS Code with Copilot Agent mode, configure .vscode/mcp.json using type http and the URL, enable the server in the tools picker, then verify in Agent mode.

    Search OpenAI developer documentation. Input schema documented in the official MCP server guide: query required; limit optional (1?50); cursor optional. Read-only.

    Fetch and read an OpenAI documentation page identified by its URL. Official OpenAI Realtime MCP example explicitly allows this tool name.

Limitations and notes
  • Documentation-only; it does not make OpenAI API calls.
  • An exact name and schema for the page-content retrieval tool was not confirmed from accessible primary documentation.
