About Octagon Deep Research MCP

Octagon's MCP server routes a natural-language prompt to its deep-research agent to gather and synthesize sources for technical, market, academic, policy, and other research questions.

What you can use it for

  • Conduct multi-source technical research, debugging research, and framework comparisons.
  • Synthesize market and competitive research.
  • Perform academic, scientific, policy, and regulatory research.
  • Compare API documentation, dependencies, packages, and integration options.
Connection and setup
Hosting
Remote hosted service; local stdio package also documented
Transport
Streamable HTTP for remote endpoint; stdio for local package
Endpoint
https://mcp.octagonai.co/deep-research/mcp
Authentication
Remote endpoint uses OAuth as configured by a supported MCP client. Local npx package requires OCTAGON_API_KEY obtained from an Octagon account's API Keys page. Keep API keys in local client environment configuration.

Requirements

  • Octagon account to authenticate via OAuth or create an API key for local package mode.
  • For local npx setup, Node.js >=18.0.0, npm/npx, and OCTAGON_API_KEY.
  • Claude.ai integration setup requires a Claude Pro, Team, or Enterprise plan; workspace owners/primary owners configure the integration.

Setup steps

  1. Recommended remote path: add https://mcp.octagonai.co/deep-research/mcp as a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server in Cursor and complete the browser OAuth flow.
  2. Claude.ai: workspace owner/primary owner adds the integration URL in Settings ? Integrations; select permitted tools, save, then users authenticate when first invoking it. Claude Pro, Team, or Enterprise is required per Octagon docs.
  3. Claude Desktop local path from the official repository: add a stdio server using command npx, args ["-y", "octagon-deep-research-mcp@latest"], and OCTAGON_API_KEY in the local environment; restart Claude.
  4. Claude Desktop remote bridge path from current docs: run npx -y mcp-remote@latest https://mcp.octagonai.co/deep-research/mcp; restart Claude and complete OAuth.
  5. Create an Octagon account and use API Keys to generate a local package key only if choosing API-key mode. No account password or API key should be pasted into chat.
  6. Verify through a harmless research prompt only if the user authorizes the external research request; research calls may consume account resources.
Tools 1

This record is Octagon’s separate `octagon-deep-research-mcp` package and hosted deep-research endpoint. Its official package reference documents one tool, `octagon-deep-research-agent`. The different `octagon-mcp-server` exposes docs and other research tools and is not conflated here.

  • octagon-deep-research-agent

Conduct in-depth research across a topic or domain. Input: prompt (string, required), a natural-language query. Official docs recommend specifying the question, time period/metrics, context, and focusing on one task per query.

Limitations and notes
  • The provider makes performance/no-rate-limit claims in its repository; these are vendor claims and current quota/pricing were not independently verified.
  • Claude.ai workspace integration is plan-restricted and owner-configured according to official docs.
  • Local package and hosted OAuth endpoint are separate setup paths; do not mix their authentication methods.
  • No live connection test was performed.
Source discrepancies
  • Older repository examples emphasize the local API-key package, while current docs recommend a hosted OAuth endpoint. Both official paths are retained as separate setup options and their credentials are not combined.
