About Lightpanda Browser MCP

A headless browser for AI and automation with a native MCP interface over stdio and an optional HTTP mode for isolated browser sessions.

What you can use it for

  • Use a headless browser in agent workflows
  • Drive a browser through the native MCP server
  • Share one HTTP process across agents while keeping browser sessions isolated
Connection and setup
Hosting
Self-hosted local browser process or Docker container.
Transport
stdio by default; the binary also documents Streamable HTTP mode.
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
No MCP account credential is documented for browser control. Separately, the optional built-in natural-language agent needs credentials for the selected model provider; these are not needed to launch the MCP browser server.

Requirements

  • Install the Lightpanda binary or official Docker image.
  • Windows has no native binary; use WSL2 or Docker. Linux release binaries require glibc; Alpine/musl users must build from source or use a compatible image.

Setup steps

  1. Install the Lightpanda binary for the operating system using the official README. It documents Homebrew for macOS, AUR for Arch, nightly Linux/macOS downloads, and Windows through WSL2; the official Docker image is another option.
  2. Verify the installed executable with `lightpanda version`.
  3. For stdio, configure the MCP client with the installed executable's absolute path as `command` and `mcp` as its argument. For shared HTTP mode, start `lightpanda mcp --port 9223` and configure the client with `http://127.0.0.1:9223/mcp`.
  4. Restart/reconnect the client and inspect tools/list. The README notes default telemetry and documents `LIGHTPANDA_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=true` to disable it.
Tools 3+

The README documents explicit session tools `session_new`, `session_list`, and `session_close`; it links to the full Lightpanda docs for the rest of the evolving MCP surface. These names are documentation evidence, not a live tools/list result.

  • session_new

Create or manage a dedicated browser session as documented for HTTP mode.

    01
  • session_list

List active browser sessions as documented for HTTP mode.

    02
  • session_close

Close a browser session as documented for HTTP mode.

    03

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • Lightpanda describes itself as beta and says browser coverage is still developing; some sites may fail or crash.
  • No native Windows binary is documented; Windows users need WSL2 or Docker.
  • The project enables usage telemetry by default unless disabled.
  • Documentation and logo were reviewed; server initialization, tools/list, and tool calls were not tested.
Original sources
  • official repository documentation

Documents installation and OS support, stdio command, HTTP endpoint/session behavior, telemetry opt-out, beta status, and limits.

  • official product logo asset

Product logo referenced from the official repository/product domain; decoded and visually reviewed on light and dark contact sheets. Selection tier A: product logo.

  • maintainer or vendor tool reference

Lightpanda vendor reference details MCP tools; session tools alone are only a subset of browser navigation/interaction capabilities.
