About @lex-tools/codebase-context-dumper

Local MCP server that recursively reads text files under a chosen project directory, respects nested .gitignore rules, skips binary files, and returns file contents with paths, optionally chunked.

What you can use it for

  • Create a text snapshot of a selected repository for LLM context.
  • Split a large codebase snapshot into multiple chunks.
Connection and setup
Hosting
Local
Transport
stdio
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
No network endpoint or auth. The MCP client launches a local process that can read files accessible to the chosen base_path.

Requirements

  • Node.js/npm runtime capable of running the published package
  • MCP client supporting local stdio servers
  • Choose a project directory intentionally; tool reads its text files subject to .gitignore and binary detection

Setup steps

  1. Add the documented MCP config using command npx and args [-y, @lex-tools/codebase-context-dumper].
  2. Restart or reload the MCP client.
  3. Call dump_codebase_context with the absolute base_path of the intended project; optionally set num_chunks (default 1) and 1-based chunk_index.
  4. Before sharing output, ensure secrets and private files are excluded by .gitignore; .gitignore rules are not a substitute for reviewing the selected directory.
Tools 1+

The stored one-tool inventory is corroborated by the publisher package description surfaced in its installation page: dump_codebase_context. This is the legacy @lex-tools/codebase-context-dumper package; similarly named projects are separate and are not merged.

  • dump_codebase_context

Recursively reads text files from base_path, honors .gitignore rules, skips binary files, adds path markers, and supports chunking.

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • Reads local files accessible to the MCP process. Use a narrow project root; inspect .gitignore and exclude secrets/private files before calling.
  • Tool returns source text to the configured AI client; directory permissions and ignored paths are security boundaries.
  • No remote mode, authentication, or client support claims beyond documented local stdio setup.
  • Package source was last updated around the 0.1.5 release; current repository activity/version freshness was not independently established.
