stdio for local CLI; Streamable HTTP supported in container mode11+ documented tools3

About Kubernetes MCP

Open-source MCP server maintained in the containers GitHub organization for Kubernetes and OpenShift cluster operations. It can access the cluster selected by the user

What you can use it for

  • Inspect Kubernetes and OpenShift cluster resources
  • Troubleshoot cluster workloads using configured read-only tools
  • Manage resources only when explicitly enabled and permitted
Connection and setup
Hosting
Local process, container, or self-hosted HTTP deployment
Transport
stdio for local CLI; Streamable HTTP supported in container mode
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
Uses the selected Kubernetes kubeconfig or in-cluster credentials; no hosted MCP OAuth service is documented.

Requirements

  • Kubernetes or OpenShift cluster and a kubeconfig/service account with the intended permissions
  • Node.js for the documented npx runner, or uv/Python package runner, or native binary
  • MCP-compatible client

Setup steps

  1. Choose a low-privilege kubeconfig or service account scoped to the intended cluster and namespace.
  2. For a local stdio setup, use the documented command `npx -y kubernetes-mcp-server@latest`; configure KUBECONFIG only if the default path is not the intended kubeconfig.
  3. Review the server configuration’s toolsets and read-only setting before connecting.
  4. Reload the client and inspect tools. Start with cluster metadata/read-only resource inspection; do not enable writes until the target cluster and permissions are confirmed.
Tools 11+

Crawl4AI fetched the official repository README and the accessible response enumerated these 11 exact identifiers from the config and core toolsets, then truncated mid-entry. The server has optional toolsets and is configuration-dependent; this is a verified partial list, not a complete inventory.

  • configuration_contexts_list

List all available context names and associated server urls from the kubeconfig file

    01
  • targets_list

    List all available targets

    02
  • configuration_view

Get the current Kubernetes configuration content as a kubeconfig YAML

    03
  • events_list

List Kubernetes events (warnings, errors, state changes) for debugging and troubleshooting in the current cluster from all namespaces. Use limit and continue to retrieve a large list one page at a time.

    04
  • namespaces_list

List all the Kubernetes namespaces in the current cluster. Use limit and continue to retrieve a large list one page at a time.

    05
  • projects_list

List all the OpenShift projects in the current cluster. Use limit and continue to retrieve a large list one page at a time.

    06
  • nodes_log

Get logs from a Kubernetes node (kubelet, kube-proxy, or other system logs). This accesses node logs through the Kubernetes API proxy to the kubelet

    07
  • nodes_stats_summary

Get detailed resource usage statistics from a Kubernetes node via the kubelet's Summary API. Provides comprehensive metrics including CPU, memory, filesystem, and network usage at the node, pod, and container levels. On systems with cgroup v2 and kernel 4.20+, also includes PSI (Pressure Stall Information) metrics that show resource pressure for CPU, memory, and I/O. See https://kubernetes.io/docs/reference/instrumentation/understand-psi-metrics/ for details on PSI metrics

    08
  • nodes_top

List the resource consumption (CPU and memory) as recorded by the Kubernetes Metrics Server for the specified Kubernetes Nodes or all nodes in the cluster. Use limit and continue to retrieve a large list one page at a time.

    09
  • pods_list

List all the Kubernetes pods in the current cluster from all namespaces. Use limit and continue to retrieve a large list one page at a time.

    10
  • pods_list_in_namespace

List all the Kubernetes pods in the specified namespace in the current cluster. Use limit and continue to retrieve a large list one page at a time.

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • Community-maintained by the containers project and not asserted as a Kubernetes upstream product.
  • The server inherits kubeconfig or in-cluster permissions and can alter cluster state depending on enabled toolsets and configuration.
  • Use a dedicated least-privilege identity; the default user kubeconfig may have broad permissions.
  • Package versions, toolsets, and configuration options change across releases.
