About Heroku MCP

Heroku provides a remote hosted MCP endpoint and a separate local Platform MCP server integrated with the Heroku CLI for app, pipeline, dyno, add-on, log, and Postgres operations.

Authentication
Remote uses OAuth browser sign-in; local heroku mcp:start reuses CLI authentication, or the standalone package can use HEROKU_API_KEY.

Requirements

  • Heroku account and access to relevant resources
  • Heroku CLI v10.8.1+ for integrated local server
  • Node.js/npm and HEROKU_API_KEY for standalone package

Setup steps

  1. For remote, add the endpoint as an HTTP MCP server and complete browser OAuth. For local, use heroku mcp:start with Heroku CLI 10.8.1+, or npx -y @heroku/mcp-server with HEROKU_API_KEY stored in the client environment. Verify with a harmless app listing.
