About GrowthBook MCP

GrowthBook MCP connects AI clients to feature flags, experiments, metrics, projects and related feature-management workflows through hosted OAuth or a self-hosted/local server.

What you can use it for

  • Search and inspect feature flags and experiments.
  • Read a bundled safe workflow and call GrowthBook's API for project/analytics work.
  • Create or manage feature flags, experiments, and related release controls when account permissions allow.
Connection and setup
Hosting
Both remote hosted and local/self-hosted
Transport
Streamable HTTP (hosted); stdio (local); Docker can provide self-hosted HTTP
Endpoint
https://mcp.growthbook.io/mcp
Authentication
Hosted GrowthBook Cloud uses browser OAuth and no API key in client config. Self-hosted/local setup uses a GrowthBook API key or personal access token; self-hosted deployments may require GB_API_URL, GB_APP_ORIGIN, GB_EMAIL, and proxy headers depending on configuration.

Requirements

  • GrowthBook Cloud or self-hosted instance and an account with appropriate project permissions.
  • Local package requires Node.js 18+ and @growthbook/mcp.
  • Use a least-privilege dedicated token for local/self-hosted setup.

Setup steps

  1. For GrowthBook Cloud, add https://mcp.growthbook.io/mcp as a remote server and complete browser OAuth.
  2. For local setup, configure `npx -y @growthbook/mcp@latest` using GB_API_KEY, with GB_API_URL / GB_APP_ORIGIN as needed for self-hosted instances.
  3. List the available bundled skills and read the relevant workflow before making changes.
  4. Begin with a read-only request to list flags in the intended project/environment.
  5. Review and explicitly approve changes to flags, experiments, or release settings.
Tools 4

Current GrowthBook MCP 2.x reference exposes four tools: growthbook_list_skills, growthbook_read_skill, growthbook_api_read and growthbook_api_write. Skills supply dynamic product workflows. Older vendor pages still describe a three-tool API bridge.

  • growthbook_list_skills

List workflows bundled with the GrowthBook MCP server.

    01
  • growthbook_read_skill

Read a selected GrowthBook workflow skill.

    02
  • growthbook_api_read

Read from the authenticated GrowthBook API using a path and parameters.

    03
  • growthbook_api_write

Write to the authenticated GrowthBook API using a path and request body.

Limitations and notes
  • GrowthBook MCP 2.0 tool surface differs from the older fixed catalog still visible in some docs.
  • Local/self-hosted setup requires a credential; keep it out of committed config and chat.
  • The effective actions depend on the account token's permissions and server instance.
  • Review changes before applying feature or experiment configuration.
Source discrepancies
  • Some GrowthBook documentation still shows an earlier 14-tool catalog and setup variables such as GB_EMAIL. The current MCP 2.0 package article documents three tools; these are kept as separate architecture/version evidence.
Original sources
  • official tool reference

Current GrowthBook materials disagree across generations: older docs describe three bridge tools, while the newer MCP 2.x reference lists four: list skills, read skills, API read, and API write. Updated this entry to the newer four-tool interface; skills define dynamic product operations.
