About Google MCP Toolbox for Databases

Google open-source MCP Toolbox for Databases connects agents to supported database systems with prebuilt database-specific toolsets and a framework for configured tools.

What you can use it for

  • Query supported databases through prebuilt tools
  • Expose curated custom database operations from a tools.yaml configuration
  • Load only a selected database toolset

Requirements

  • Node.js and npm/npx for the convenience server command, or a Toolbox binary/container.
  • A supported database and credentials for each configured data source.

Setup steps

  1. Choose the database type and desired prebuilt toolset from the official Prebuilt Tools Reference: https://mcp-toolbox.dev/documentation/pre-built-tools/.
  2. Use the documented database-specific environment variables/credentials; do not copy example secrets into a shared config file.
  3. Add a stdio MCP server with command `npx` and args `-y`, `@toolbox-sdk/server`, `--prebuilt=<database>`, `--stdio` (replace <database> only with a supported name from the reference).
  4. Restart the MCP client and inspect tools/list. Toolbox tool names and capabilities depend on the selected prebuilt database/toolset or your custom tools.yaml.
Tools 2+

These two generic tool names are examples in the current official overview, not a complete roster. Actual tools depend on selected database prebuilt toolset or user-defined Toolbox configuration.

  • list_tables

List tables in a configured database.

    01
  • execute_sql

Execute a configured database SQL tool.

    02

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • Tool names depend on database prebuilt and/or user-defined tool configuration.
  • Database reads or writes depend on configured queries and credentials; use least-privilege database access.
