About GitLab MCP

GitLab-hosted remote MCP server for authorized GitLab project, issue, merge request, and software-lifecycle workflows. Tool groups and data visibility depend on GitLab version, instance settings, user access, and configured toolsets.

What you can use it for

  • Browse projects, groups, repositories, issues/work items, merge requests and CI pipelines.
  • Search code and GitLab resources, with toolsets selected by the instance or client.

Authentication
OAuth 2.0 Dynamic Client Registration with the `mcp` scope; alternatively documented fine-grained PAT with MCP tool resource and Execute permission. Legacy PAT, project access token, and group access token are rejected.

Requirements

  • GitLab instance that has allowed access to the MCP server; for GitLab.com this is enabled at the top-level group
  • MCP client with remote HTTP transport and OAuth support
  • For stdio proxy mode: Node.js 20+ and npx

Setup steps

  1. For GitLab.com, add `https://gitlab.com/api/v4/mcp` as a remote HTTP MCP server; for Self-Managed/Dedicated, replace the host with the official instance URL.
  2. Reconnect and approve the OAuth browser flow. The server requests the documented `mcp` OAuth scope.
  3. If using the toolset header, choose only required toolsets such as the documented `core` and `work_items`; toolset names and available capabilities depend on instance/version.
  4. Confirm tools are listed, then use a harmless read-only project or issue lookup. Check the GitLab group or instance setting if initialization is denied.
