Local stdio MCP server for managing and evaluating Flipt v2 Git-native feature flags and environments.

Authentication
Optional Flipt API key through FLIPT_API_KEY. Configure FLIPT_URL for the Flipt API; the documented default is http://localhost:8080. Optional FLIPT_ENVIRONMENT sets the default environment when a call does not specify one.

Requirements

  • Node.js runtime for the npm/npx method, or Docker for container setup
  • A reachable Flipt server; default API URL is http://localhost:8080
  • Flipt API key is optional and should be provided through FLIPT_API_KEY when auth is configured

Setup steps

  1. Choose the package matching the target Flipt major version. Flipt v1 uses @flipt-io/mcp-server-flipt; Flipt v2 uses @flipt-io/mcp-server-flipt-v2. A v2 server with environments and Git-backed storage uses the v2 package.
  2. Add the selected npm command as a local stdio server: npx -y @flipt-io/mcp-server-flipt-v2. Alternatively, use the corresponding Docker image documented in the repository.
  3. Set FLIPT_URL to the target Flipt API URL and, if required, provide FLIPT_API_KEY through a local secret environment variable. For v2, optionally set FLIPT_ENVIRONMENT.
  4. Restart the MCP client, inspect the returned tool list, and begin with a read-only list or flag evaluation. Ask for explicit approval before create/update/delete/toggle operations.

Current Flipt v2 package README confirms all 36 stored tool names. Writes apply revision checks to prevent silent concurrent overwrites; tools manage environments, flags, rules, segments, rollouts and constraints. Evaluation calls are read/evaluation operations.

Limitations and notes
  • The v1 and v2 packages have different tool surfaces and data models; do not interchange package instructions.
  • Feature flag writes can affect live application behavior; review scope/environment and approve each write.
  • v2 uses revision checks for concurrent changes; on conflict, reread and retry rather than overwriting.
