About codebase-memory-mcp

A local MCP server that indexes a codebase into a persistent graph for code search, architecture exploration, call-path tracing, and change-impact analysis.

What you can use it for

  • Search a local codebase by symbols and structure
  • Trace function call paths
  • Review code architecture and change impact
  • Maintain a local code knowledge graph
Connection and setup
Hosting
Self-hosted local process; indexing and queries run locally
Transport
stdio
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
No API key or hosted service is required for local indexing and graph queries.

Requirements

  • Native releases are available for macOS, Linux, and Windows and require no language runtime.
  • The documented npm wrapper requires Node.js >=18; npm package metadata checked at https://www.npmjs.com/package/codebase-memory-mcp.
  • Access to the repository files that the user wants indexed.

Setup steps

  1. Install the official npm wrapper with `npm install -g codebase-memory-mcp` (or use an official platform release from https://github.com/DeusData/codebase-memory-mcp/releases).
  2. Add a stdio MCP server with command `codebase-memory-mcp` and no args; ensure the npm global executable is on PATH. The installer also supports client auto-configuration, but manual client configuration avoids changing unrelated client entries.
  3. Restart the MCP client and ask it to index the current project. Review the target repository and local indexing scope first.
  4. Verify the server appears in the client's MCP list and inspect tools/list; the documented tool surface varies by build/profile and must not be treated as a live count.
Tools 8+

Official documentation names search_graph, trace_path, detect_changes, query_graph, get_architecture, get_code_snippet, check_index_coverage, and manage_adr; it reports a larger overall tool set. These are documented names, not an observed complete tools/list response.

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • Reads and indexes local source repositories; review file access and index location before use.
  • The upstream installer can modify MCP client configuration when auto-detecting clients; manual installation/configuration is available.
  • The repository notes that Microsoft Defender may display a false-positive ML detection for a release binary; users should review the publisher's verification information and checksums.
  • The official site's inline icon was not suitable at card size on both themes; used the verified repository owner's avatar as the logo fallback (tier D).
  • Documentation was reviewed; MCP initialization, tools/list, and tool calls were not tested.
Original sources
  • official project repository documentation

Repository identifies a local stdio MCP, supported native releases, manual configuration command, partial tool names, and runtime/security caveats.

  • official project documentation

Project site describes local code indexing and documented use cases; links to the official GitHub repository, confirming project ownership.

  • package registry metadata

Current package metadata reports Node.js >=18, package version 0.12.1, and the codebase-memory-mcp executable; this is package-wrapper runtime information, not a requirement for native release binaries.

  • verified repository owner avatar

Official project site links to the DeusData repository; inspected this repository owner's avatar after the product site's inline icon failed the card contrast check on both themes. Selection tier D.

  • maintainer or vendor tool reference

Current official project site advertises 17 MCP tools; existing eight rows are a partial sample.
