About Browserbase MCP

Browserbase hosted browser MCP automates browser sessions using navigation, action, observation, and extraction tools. The former local GitHub server is archived.

What you can use it for

  • Cloud browser automation
Connection and setup
Hosting
hosted
Transport
Streamable HTTP
Endpoint
https://mcp.browserbase.com
Authentication
Browserbase account credentials/authentication required; exact account setup is publisher-specific.

Requirements

  • Browserbase account and API key
  • Browserbase Project ID for local package
  • MCP client supporting Streamable HTTP for hosted use or stdio for local use
  • For local setup, required package environment values include BROWSERBASE_API_KEY, BROWSERBASE_PROJECT_ID, and GEMINI_API_KEY

Setup steps

  1. Get the Browserbase API key from the official dashboard.
  2. For hosted setup, add https://mcp.browserbase.com/mcp to the client and include browserbaseApiKey=<YOUR_API_KEY> as documented; treat query-string credentials as secrets and avoid sharing resulting URLs.
  3. For local setup, use the official npm package @browserbasehq/mcp with the documented BROWSERBASE_API_KEY, BROWSERBASE_PROJECT_ID, and GEMINI_API_KEY values, or the documented Docker image.
  4. Reload the client and verify by starting a browser session and navigating to a harmless public page.
  5. Pass the returned sessionId on calls when the client does not preserve MCP session IDs between requests.
Tools 6+

Six hosted tool identifiers confirmed by maintainer release notes to replace the deprecated local names and align with the hosted server. Older archived local server removed screenshot/get_url/agent tools; verify live connection for changes.
