About Box MCP

Box hosted remote MCP provides permission-aware search and operations across files, folders, collaboration, Hubs, Box AI and document generation.

What you can use it for

  • Search and manage files/folders, metadata and collaborations.
  • Query Box AI across files/Hubs, manage Hubs and generate documents.
Connection and setup
Hosting

Transport
Streamable HTTP
Endpoint
https://mcp.box.com
Authentication
OAuth 2.0 app credentials and Box authorization token.

Requirements

  • Box administrator enables predefined MCP server and scopes
  • Box user permissions for requested content
  • Enterprise Advanced license for Doc Gen scope

Setup steps

  1. In Box Admin Console, open Integrations and enable the predefined Box MCP server or configure an unlisted integration.
  2. For an unlisted app, add integration credentials, copy the generated Client ID and Client Secret into the client’s secure OAuth configuration, register the redirect URI supplied by the client, and choose only needed scopes. Do not put these values in prompts or catalog data.
  3. Add the official endpoint `https://mcp.box.com` to the MCP client and complete OAuth login.
  4. Reconnect and inspect tools; administrators can enable or disable tool groups. Start with read-only search/read operations and review effects before write, sharing, collaboration, upload, or document generation tools.
