About Tableau MCP

Connects AI agents to Tableau Cloud or Server to query curated data, inspect workbooks and views, analyze Pulse metrics, and manage Tableau content.

What you can use it for

  • Ask questions over curated Tableau data sources
  • Find and analyze published workbooks, views, and custom views
  • Inspect Tableau Pulse metric definitions and insights
  • Manage Tableau content or Prep flows when the user has the required permissions and tools are enabled
Connection and setup
Hosting
Remote hosted on Tableau Cloud or local/self-hosted
Transport
HTTP (remote hosted); stdio (local)
Endpoint
https://mcp.tableau.com
Authentication
Hosted Tableau Cloud service uses OAuth. Local/server deployments support configured authentication methods including OAuth, PAT, UAT, Direct Trust, or passthrough; method and prerequisites vary. OAuth is recommended for production multi-user HTTP deployments.

Requirements

  • Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server account and site
  • API access permission for the user/data source
  • Node.js 18+ for the documented npx local setup
  • For Tableau Server OAuth, version 2025.3 or newer; features may be gated by Tableau SKU

Setup steps

  1. For Tableau Cloud hosted setup, configure the remote MCP endpoint https://mcp.tableau.com in a supported client and complete Tableau OAuth sign-in.
  2. For local stdio setup, run npx -y @tableau/mcp-server@latest and provide the documented SERVER, SITE_NAME, PAT_NAME, and PAT_VALUE environment variables when using PAT authentication.
  3. Keep credentials in the client's secret/environment store. For production multi-user HTTP deployments, follow Tableau's OAuth deployment guide rather than using a shared PAT.
  4. Reload the client and verify with a documented read-only request such as listing data sources.
