About Readwise MCP

Official hosted Readwise MCP searches and manages both the Highlights library and Reader documents, including highlights, tags, documents, exports, metadata, and locations.

What you can use it for

  • Reading library search and curation
Connection and setup
Hosting
hosted
Transport
Streamable HTTP
Endpoint
https://mcp2.readwise.io/mcp
Authentication
OAuth account authorization via supported client.

Requirements

  • A Readwise account; available account features may depend on the user's Readwise/Reader subscription.
  • An MCP client that supports remote HTTP, or a local compatibility bridge for clients without remote HTTP support.
  • Browser access to authorize the Readwise account.

Setup steps

  1. Add https://mcp2.readwise.io/mcp as a remote MCP server in a compatible client.
  2. Start the client's connect/authenticate flow and authorize Readwise in the browser.
  3. For Codex CLI, use `codex mcp add readwise --url https://mcp2.readwise.io/mcp`, then `codex mcp login readwise`.
  4. For Claude Code, use `claude mcp add --transport http readwise https://mcp2.readwise.io/mcp`, then authenticate through `/mcp`.
  5. Verify by asking the client to search the user's own saved highlights or Reader documents.

Limitations and notes
  • The current server supersedes the older Readwise-only server and covers Reader plus Highlights. Public setup docs describe tool actions but use display labels instead of exact MCP identifiers.
Original sources
  • official publisher documentation

Current docs detail 15 Reader and 6 Readwise actions, but reviewed official tool reference uses action labels rather than stable tool identifiers.

  • official legacy implementation

Legacy repository registers search_readwise_highlights, but its README says deprecated and directs users to the hosted server; excluded from current inventory.

  • official documentation

Current publisher or maintainer documentation reviewed 2026-10-28T19:00:00.000Z.

  • official vendor documentation

Official docs enumerate 16 Reader actions and 6 Highlights actions (22 described capabilities total); they do not publish canonical MCP tool identifiers.
