About Prometheus MCP

Prometheus’ MCP server provides PromQL queries, metric and target inspection, documentation and runbook access, and Prometheus management tools against a configured backend.

What you can use it for

  • Run PromQL and range queries
  • Inspect metric metadata, labels, and series
  • Search/read embedded Prometheus documentation and runbooks
Connection and setup
Hosting
Local process; optional self-hosted HTTP service
Transport
stdio by default; Streamable HTTP when explicitly configured
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
No MCP login; target Prometheus authentication/TLS is configured through documented HTTP client configuration as needed.

Requirements

  • Prometheus or compatible backend reachable over HTTP
  • Release binary for the local OS/architecture, or documented container deployment
  • MCP-compatible client

Setup steps

  1. Download the Prometheus MCP release binary matching the host OS/architecture.
  2. Configure the process with the target address using --prometheus.url <PROMETHEUS_URL> or PROMETHEUS_MCP_SERVER_PROMETHEUS_URL. Do not store credentials in the catalog or prompt.
  3. Use the binary as a local stdio MCP server; the repository documents HTTP mode separately.
  4. Restart the client and inspect tools. Test with a harmless read-only query against a non-sensitive metric.
Tools 27

The current repository reference lists 27 default tools. Three TSDB Admin tools are separately gated by --dangerous.enable-tsdb-admin-tools and are excluded from this default inventory.

Limitations and notes
  • Requires a reachable Prometheus-compatible backend and can expose the data available to the configured identity.
  • Tool surface is configurable; TSDB administration tools require an additional flag.
  • This is a local/self-hosted integration; no vendor-hosted endpoint or OAuth service is documented.
Original sources
  • official project repository

Current Prometheus project repository lists 27 default tools. The three TSDB Admin tools require a separate dangerous flag and are not included in this default inventory.

  • official product logo

  • official tool documentation

Prometheus maintainer README describes 11 core tools plus separately selectable tools; TSDB Admin tools need an extra flag. Default advertised surface is version/configuration-dependent.
