About OpenSubtitles MCP

OpenSubtitles? MCP server searches subtitle catalogs by title, identifiers or file hash, downloads subtitle files, and can calculate the OpenSubtitles hash of a local media file.

What you can use it for

  • Find subtitles by film/show title, language, IMDb/TMDb IDs or movie hash
  • Download subtitles in supported formats
  • Calculate OpenSubtitles file hashes for local media
Connection and setup
Hosting
both
Transport
Local stdio (publisher's remote option uses a local proxy; the catalog's root HTTP URL is not a Streamable HTTP endpoint)
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
An OpenSubtitles account API key is optional for setup and search; it is only needed for download_subtitle and can be entered locally as OPENSUBTITLES_USER_KEY.

Requirements

  • Node.js 18 or newer

Setup steps

  1. The publisher's documented local stdio command is npx -y @opensubtitles/mcp-server@latest with MCP_MODE=stdio and LOG_LEVEL=info.
  2. Subtitle search and file-hash calculation work without an API key; downloads require an OpenSubtitles account API key and available account quota.
  3. The publisher's remote option is a local stdio proxy package, not a direct Streamable HTTP URL at the catalog root.
Tools 3

OpenSubtitles maintainer README enumerates the three stored tools: search_subtitles, download_subtitle and calculate_file_hash. Downloads are subject to API-key and rate-limit rules; search is freemium.

  • search_subtitles

Search OpenSubtitles for matching subtitle files.

    01
  • download_subtitle

Download subtitle content by subtitle ID.

    02
  • calculate_file_hash

Calculate the OpenSubtitles hash for a local video file.

    03
Limitations and notes
  • Anonymous searches are documented as unlimited but anonymous downloads are zero per day; authenticated download allowance depends on account quota.
  • Hosted access is documented through a remote proxy package; direct remote HTTP connection settings were not verified.
  • calculate_file_hash reads a caller-supplied local path, so users should only authorize intended files.
  • No runtime test performed.
