About MCP Macaco Playwright

A community Playwright-based browser automation MCP package with navigation, page inspection, interaction, screenshots, network/console inspection, and optional Chrome DevTools Protocol support.

What you can use it for

  • Navigate and inspect web pages using Playwright.
  • Automate browser UI interactions and extract visible text.
  • Capture screenshots or inspect browser network/console activity.
  • Connect to an existing Chrome browser over CDP when explicitly configured.
Connection and setup
Hosting
local (stdio by default); optional local HTTP/SSE modes
Transport
stdio; Streamable HTTP; SSE
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
No authentication is required for the default local stdio process. The repository documents local HTTP/SSE modes but no hosted service endpoint or authentication.

Requirements

  • Node.js >=18
  • npm/npx
  • Playwright browser binaries; README recommends npx playwright install
  • System dependencies for browsers may be needed; README documents npx playwright install-deps

Setup steps

  1. Install/use the package with Node.js 18+: npx -y -p mcp-macaco-playwright macacoai-playwright-mcp. Package metadata maps the macacoai-playwright-mcp executable to cli.js; with no --port the source starts stdio transport.
  2. Install browser binaries as needed with npx playwright install. Linux environments may need npx playwright install-deps.
  3. Add the command and arguments to the MCP client's local stdio configuration.
  4. Default browser launch is headed except on Linux without DISPLAY, where it is headless; use documented CLI flags such as --headless, --browser, --cdp-endpoint, or --caps only when needed.
  5. For remote/HTTP mode, the repository supports selecting a port, which starts HTTP transports. This runs a server locally; do not use an endpoint from unrelated examples as a hosted production service.
  6. Verify with a harmless browser navigation to a public page. Browser interaction and arbitrary page JavaScript should be treated as privileged actions.
Tools 33+

33 exact function names were captured from the public README reference. README claims 50+ functions and does not establish that the listed reference is a complete, current runtime tool catalog; count is a documented partial list, not total tools.

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • README claims 50+ functions but exact full active tool catalog was not established; 33 documented names are stored as a partial list.
  • Browser automation can perform consequential actions on logged-in sites; restrict access and supervise writes/uploads/submissions.
  • Default local browser may use a visible Chrome window; browser binaries/system dependencies may need installation.
  • No official Microsoft affiliation established despite Microsoft copyright headers in some source files.
  • No hosted remote endpoint was verified; HTTP/SSE require locally starting with --port.
  • No runtime connection test performed.
Source discrepancies
  • README describes installation with npm install and embedding createConnection but does not give a standalone client command; package manifest defines CLI binary, and source defines stdio as default. Configuration recipe is derived from those first-party files and marked not tested.
  • README claims 50+ tools, but its enumerated reference only yielded 33 exact documented names; stored list is partial.
