About Knowledge Graph Memory

An official local memory server that persists entities, relations, and observations as a knowledge graph in a JSONL file and exposes graph operations through MCP tools and a resource.

What you can use it for

  • Persist named entities and factual observations
  • Create or inspect relations between people, organizations, events, and concepts
  • Search a graph and open selected nodes across conversations
Connection and setup
Hosting
Local
Transport
stdio
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
No external account or credential is documented; graph data is stored locally in the configured memory file.

Requirements

  • Node.js/npm for npx setup or Docker for the documented container option
  • MCP-compatible client
  • Writable location for MEMORY_FILE_PATH if customized

Setup steps

  1. Configure command npx with args [-y, @modelcontextprotocol/server-memory]. On Windows the maintainers document using cmd /c npx.
  2. Optionally set MEMORY_FILE_PATH to an absolute JSONL path so data survives package/client changes and is easy to back up. The default path is inside the server package directory.
  3. Reload the client. Verify with read_graph, which is read-only and does not change stored data.
  4. The server also publishes the knowledge-graph resource at memory://knowledge-graph; clients can subscribe to updates.
Tools 9

The official README and current implementation document these nine tools plus a separate knowledge-graph resource. Delete tools remove graph entities, observations, or relations.

Limitations and notes
  • Data is local to the configured file; sharing one file across clients requires a writable local filesystem and the project's locking behavior.
  • Memory content may be sensitive; secure the file and backups appropriately.
  • Delete tools can permanently remove stored graph information.
