About Inbox Zero MCP

Inbox Zero hosted MCP connects authorized clients to linked Gmail and Outlook for inbox search/read, drafts, automation rules and email statistics; it cannot send email.

What you can use it for

  • Search and read linked Gmail/Outlook mail and threads.
  • Create mailbox drafts and manage automation rules; read email statistics.
Connection and setup
Hosting
hosted or self-hosted
Transport
Streamable HTTP
Endpoint
https://www.getinboxzero.com/mcp
Authentication
OAuth authorization after Google or Microsoft sign-in; account MCP must be enabled.

Requirements

  • An Inbox Zero account with a linked Gmail or Outlook account.
  • An MCP client that supports remote Streamable HTTP and OAuth.
  • ChatGPT connector use also requires Developer mode and plan availability per ChatGPT settings.

Setup steps

  1. In Inbox Zero, open the account menu at the bottom of the sidebar, choose Settings, scroll to Account ? MCP, turn on MCP, and copy the URL shown in Connect MCP. The documented hosted URL is https://www.getinboxzero.com/mcp.
  2. In the MCP client, add a remote Streamable HTTP server with that URL and choose OAuth when prompted. Sign in with Google or Microsoft and select Allow on the Inbox Zero consent page.
  3. For ChatGPT, enable Developer mode in Settings ? Apps, add an app/connector with the MCP URL, scan tools, and complete Inbox Zero OAuth. For other clients, use the client's remote MCP/OAuth flow.
  4. Reconnect, inspect available tools, and start with a read operation. The service can create drafts and modify rules but does not send email.
  5. For self-hosting, enable MCP with `MCP_SERVER_ENABLED=true` and `NEXT_PUBLIC_EXTERNAL_API_ENABLED=true`, configure `API_KEY_SALT`, and use `https://<your-inbox-zero-host>/mcp`; see the official self-hosting API reference.
Tools 11+

Added 11 exact tool registrations from the current publisher repository server implementation; official docs independently describe the corresponding inbox, rules, and stats capabilities. Rules and draft writes are scope-gated; draft creation never sends mail. Repository main is a moving source, so this roster is current-source rather than release-pinned.

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • Cannot send email; drafts remain in the mailbox until the user sends them.
  • OAuth authorization requires Google or Microsoft sign-in; email-code sign-in cannot authorize MCP clients.
