About Maps Grounding Lite MCP

Google Maps Platform's hosted Maps Grounding Lite MCP server provides place search, weather lookup, route computation, place-name resolution, and Google Maps URL resolution for LLM applications.

What you can use it for

  • Find businesses, addresses, and points of interest
  • Look up current weather and forecasts for a specified location
  • Compute driving or walking routes
  • Resolve place names and Maps URLs to Place IDs
Connection and setup
Hosting
Remote, Google-hosted
Transport
Streamable HTTP
Endpoint
https://mapstools.googleapis.com/mcp
Authentication
Google Cloud authentication using an API key or OAuth client, configured through Google Cloud MCP server setup. A Cloud project and API enablement are prerequisites.

Requirements

  • Google Cloud project
  • Enable the Maps Grounding Lite API and MCP server access
  • Configure Google Cloud authentication (API key or OAuth client) before use
  • Billing/account eligibility may apply under the project's Maps Platform terms

Setup steps

  1. Create or select a Google Cloud project and enable Maps Grounding Lite / MCP access.
  2. Configure Google Cloud authentication using the official setup guide; keep API credentials in client-local secure configuration and never paste them into chat.
  3. Add `https://mapstools.googleapis.com/mcp` as a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server in a supported client, supplying the documented Google Cloud auth.
  4. Complete the client's authentication/consent flow if using OAuth.
  5. Verify with a harmless `search_places` request; include a sufficiently specific location.
Tools 5

Google documents five tools: search_places, lookup_weather, compute_routes, resolve_maps_urls, and resolve_names. The service requires a project with billing and Maps Grounding Lite API enabled; demo key is available for testing.

  • search_places

Search Google Maps for places, businesses, addresses, locations, and points of interest.

    01
  • lookup_weather

Retrieve current conditions, hourly forecasts, or daily forecasts for a location.

    02
  • compute_routes

Compute a route between an origin and destination; documented travel modes include driving and walking.

    03
  • resolve_names

Resolve a batch of specific place names or addresses to canonical Google Maps Place IDs.

    04
  • resolve_maps_urls

Resolve Google Maps URLs to canonical Google Maps Place IDs.

    05
Limitations and notes
  • Route tool is documented for route computation; do not imply turn-by-turn navigation or real-time traffic guidance.
  • Weather forecast horizons are bounded and vary by forecast type.
  • Place/name and URL resolution tools have specific batch and input constraints described in the reference.
