About Google Cloud Compute Engine MCP

Google's hosted remote MCP server lets an AI client inspect and manage Compute Engine virtual machines, managed instance groups, disks, images, accelerators, reservations, commitments, and snapshots in a Google Cloud project.

What you can use it for

  • List and inspect VM instances, attached disks, and instance templates
  • Inspect managed instance groups and their instances
  • Find available machine types and accelerators for a zone
  • Review disks, snapshots, reservations, and commitments
  • Create, start, stop, reset, resize, or delete VMs when authorized

Endpoint

Authentication
Google Cloud OAuth 2.0 with IAM authorization. The setup guide supports Google Cloud user credentials, an OAuth client, or an agent identity. The principal needs roles/mcp.toolUser (mcp.tools.call) plus the IAM permissions for requested Compute Engine actions. Choose compute.read-only for read-only access or compute.read-write for modifying operations; additional scopes may be required by specific resources.

Requirements

  • Google Cloud account and selected or created project
  • Billing enabled on the project
  • Compute Engine API enabled
  • MCP server enabled for the project and user authentication configured
  • IAM permission roles/mcp.toolUser plus operation-specific Compute Engine roles; setup guide lists Compute Instance Admin (v1), Compute Security Admin, Service Account User, and Service Usage Admin for its documented configuration path

Setup steps

  1. In Google Cloud Console, select or create a project and ensure billing is enabled.
  2. Enable the Compute Engine API and enable the Google Cloud MCP server for the project; configure authentication using Google's MCP server authentication guide.
  3. Ask a project administrator to grant roles/mcp.toolUser and only the Compute Engine IAM roles needed for the intended operations.
  4. In a client that supports remote MCP, add the server URL https://compute.googleapis.com/mcp using Streamable HTTP. Select OAuth 2.0/IAM authentication and the least-privileged compute.read-only or compute.read-write scope. Use the client-specific guidance linked from Google's setup docs for OAuth client redirect URI requirements.
  5. Complete the Google sign-in/consent flow in the client, then verify with a harmless read-only request such as listing instances in a known project and zone. Do not test by creating, modifying, or deleting cloud resources.

Limitations and notes
  • This is a cloud management integration; tool calls can create, modify, stop, reset, or delete billable infrastructure. Use read-only OAuth scope/IAM permissions where possible.
  • Google states the service does not provide full regional isolation and tool calls might route through any region.
  • Billing, API enablement, OAuth setup, and IAM grants require project-level access; some require an administrator.
  • Exact input schemas are available from Google's documented tools/list method; not reproduced here.
  • No runtime connection test performed.

The current Google Cloud reference and a direct unauthenticated tools/list request both return 29 tool names; the runtime list exactly matches the stored inventory. Endpoint is https://compute.googleapis.com/mcp; authentication and actual operations require Google Cloud OAuth/IAM and relevant Compute Engine permissions.
