About Cloud Monitoring MCP

Google Cloud managed MCP server for Cloud Monitoring. Exact tool names and accessible operations depend on the published server reference and configured Google Cloud permissions.

What you can use it for

  • Lists time series data from the Google Cloud Monitoring API
  • Evaluate a PromQL query in a range of time
  • Use this as the primary tool to get information about a specific alerting policy. Alerting policies define the conditions under which you want to be notified about issues with your services. This is useful for understanding the details of a specific alert configuration.
  • Use this as the primary tool to list the alerting policies in a Google Cloud project. Alerting policies define the conditions under which you want to be notified about issues with your services. This is useful for understanding what alerts are currently configured.
  • Use this as the primary tool to get information about a specific alert. An alert is the representation of a violation of an alert policy. This is useful for understanding the details of a specific alert.
  • Use this as the primary tool to list the alerts in a Google Cloud project. An alert is the representation of a violation of an alert policy. This is useful for understanding current and past violations of an alert policy.
Connection and setup
Hosting
Google-managed remote
Transport
Streamable HTTP
Endpoint
https://monitoring.googleapis.com/mcp
Authentication
Google Cloud authentication: OAuth 2.0 using Application Default Credentials (ADC) in supported Google clients, or a client OAuth ID/secret or bearer token in compatible third-party clients. The principal needs mcp.tools.call plus the underlying product permissions; API key authentication is only available for services that explicitly support it.

Requirements

  • A Google Cloud project and access to the target product/resource.
  • Enable this MCP service and its underlying Google Cloud API as required by the product guide.
  • An MCP client that supports Streamable HTTP.
  • An identity with the MCP Tool User role (roles/mcp.toolUser) or equivalent mcp.tools.call permission, plus permissions for the underlying product operations.

Setup steps

  1. Choose the correct global or regional endpoint for your data location; this catalog lists the documented endpoint.
  2. In the Google Cloud project, enable the MCP service and the underlying product API if the product guide requires it.
  3. Authenticate the client with Google Cloud ADC (simplest with Antigravity/Gemini CLI) or configure OAuth 2.0 credentials in a compatible client.
  4. Grant the connecting identity roles/mcp.toolUser and only the product IAM roles needed for the intended operations.
  5. Add monitoring.googleapis.com to the client as a Streamable HTTP MCP server and complete sign-in.
  6. Refresh the client tool list and check that the tools match the product reference; availability may depend on permissions and selected toolset.
Tools 9

Nine read tools query time series/PromQL, alerts/policies, metric descriptors and dashboards. query_range evaluates PromQL over a range. OAuth scopes include Monitoring access; check project/IAM scope. Inventory contains no mutation tools.

  • list_timeseries

Lists time series data from the Google Cloud Monitoring API

    01
  • query_range

Evaluate a PromQL query in a range of time

    02
  • get_alert_policy

Use this as the primary tool to get information about a specific alerting policy. Alerting policies define the conditions under which you want to be notified about issues with your services. This is useful for understanding the details of a specific alert configuration.

    03
  • list_alert_policies

Use this as the primary tool to list the alerting policies in a Google Cloud project. Alerting policies define the conditions under which you want to be notified about issues with your services. This is useful for understanding what alerts are currently configured.

    04
  • get_alert

Use this as the primary tool to get information about a specific alert. An alert is the representation of a violation of an alert policy. This is useful for understanding the details of a specific alert.

    05
  • list_alerts

Use this as the primary tool to list the alerts in a Google Cloud project. An alert is the representation of a violation of an alert policy. This is useful for understanding current and past violations of an alert policy.

    06
  • list_metric_descriptors

Use this as the primary tool to discover the types of metrics available in a Google Cloud project. This is a good first step to understanding what data is available for monitoring and building dashboards or alerts.

    07
  • list_dashboards

Use this as the primary tool to retrieve a list of existing custom monitoring dashboards in a Google Cloud project. Custom monitoring dashboards let users view and analyze data from different sources in the same context. This is useful for understanding what custom dashboards are currently configured and available in a given project.

    08
  • get_dashboard

Use this as the primary tool to retrieve a single specific custom monitoring dashboard from a Google Cloud project using the resource name of the requested dashboard. Custom monitoring dashboards let users view and analyze data from different sources in the same context. This is often used as a follow on to list_dashboards to get full details on a specific dashboard.
