About DataForSEO MCP

DataForSEO's official MCP server gives AI clients access to DataForSEO API data and documentation, including SERP, keyword, backlink, and other SEO research capabilities. The current v3 implementation supports remote OAuth and local stdio/HTTP modes.

What you can use it for

  • Query search-engine result pages and keyword data
  • Research backlinks, rankings, on-page details, and SEO metrics
  • Search and retrieve DataForSEO API documentation
  • Use the CLI documentation/search commands for API method setup
Connection and setup
Hosting
Both: hosted remote MCP and local npm server
Transport
Streamable HTTP (remote and local HTTP); stdio (local)
Endpoint
https://mcp.dataforseo.com/v3/mcp
Authentication
Remote HTTP uses OAuth by default. Local stdio requires DataForSEO API login/password through `DATAFORSEO_LOGIN` and `DATAFORSEO_PASSWORD`; local HTTP can use OAuth or those environment credentials.

Requirements

  • DataForSEO account with API access credentials for billable data requests
  • Node.js runtime for npx local server
  • Specific API modules may require corresponding account subscription/enablement

Setup steps

  1. For remote connection, add `https://mcp.dataforseo.com/v3/mcp` as a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server and complete its OAuth flow.
  2. For local stdio, configure command `npx` and argument `dataforseo-mcp-server@latest`, with login/password sourced from local secret environment variables.
  3. For local HTTP mode, run `npx dataforseo-mcp-server@latest --mode http` and point the client at the documented local `/mcp` URL; keep it bound to localhost unless intentionally secured.
  4. Authenticate with API access credentials from DataForSEO dashboard. Do not paste credentials into chat or store in versioned config.
  5. Verify with a low-cost docs search or read-only query and check module enablement and account balance before larger requests.
Tools 4

Current DataForSEO v3 reference lists four tools: docs_index, docs_list_sections, docs_search and api_request. The legacy v2 MCP with many endpoint-specific tools is deprecated.

  • docs_index

Fetch the DataForSEO API documentation index, optionally filtered by section.

    01
  • docs_list_sections

    List available API documentation sections.

    02
  • docs_search

Fetch documentation for a URL or API path.

    03
  • api_request

Make an authenticated request to a DataForSEO API endpoint.

Limitations and notes
  • DataForSEO API requests may incur usage charges. Check account balance, pricing, and rate limits.
  • Some module endpoints return authorization/not-enabled errors unless the account has the relevant module subscription.
  • Previous v2+ MCP server is deprecated; this record uses the current v3 repository/hosted endpoint.
  • Handle login/password credentials as secrets.
Source discrepancies
  • Discovery label may resolve to older v2+ implementation or community DataForSEO wrappers. This record identifies the current official v3 server and marks the previous server as deprecated.
Original sources
  • official tool reference

The current v3 server documents exactly four MCP tools: docs_index, docs_list_sections, docs_search and api_request. The older API-operation-per-tool v2 server is deprecated and is a separate catalog.
