About Contextual AI MCP

MCP integrations that route questions to Contextual AI agents for retrieval-augmented answers grounded in a configured knowledge base and returned with citations.

What you can use it for

  • Ask questions over a configured Contextual AI knowledge base
  • Retrieve domain-specific answers with source citations
  • Use Contextual AI agent retrieval from Cursor or Claude Desktop
Connection and setup
Hosting
both: hosted platform server and local repository implementations
Transport
Streamable HTTP (hosted endpoint per platform guidance); stdio (repository implementation)
Endpoint
https://mcp.app.contextual.ai/mcp/
Authentication
The local implementation requires Contextual AI API_KEY and AGENT_ID. Hosted sign-in and entitlement details are not fully captured in inspected repository text.

Requirements

  • Contextual AI account/agent
  • API key and agent ID for local implementation
  • Python 3.10+ for local implementation
  • uv or pip

Setup steps

  1. Hosted option: add https://mcp.app.contextual.ai/mcp/ as a remote server and follow Contextual AI platform sign-in/authorization.
  2. Local option: clone the official repository, create a Python environment, and install with pip install -e .
  3. Configure API_KEY and AGENT_ID for the target agent.
  4. Choose the documented server variant and customize its query-tool description for the knowledge domain.
Tools 1

Current repo documents a query-focused RAG tool. Hosted agent/knowledge-base configuration and authentication determine the usable context; the single stored name is the documented baseline, not an authenticated runtime snapshot.

  • query

An enterprise search tool that can answer questions about a specific knowledge base

    Parameters: prompt, agent_id
    01
Limitations and notes
  • Local repository implementation currently documents stdio only.
  • Responses depend on API limits/quotas and configured agent.
  • Remote hosted server is a distinct implementation path from the repository server.
