Authentication

No credential is required for default arXiv workflows. An optional free Semantic Scholar API key can reduce citation_graph rate limiting; obtain it at https://www.semanticscholar.org/product/api#api-key.

Requirements

• uv/uvx, which provides the documented command-based Python package launch.
• Local paper storage defaults to ~/.arxiv-mcp-server/papers.
• Optional [pdf] extra for paper PDF conversion and [pro] extra for local semantic search; semantic search applies only to downloaded papers.

Setup steps

1. Install Astral uv from https://docs.astral.sh/uv/ if uvx is unavailable.
2. Configure the MCP client for stdio with command uvx and args [arxiv-mcp-server]. The official README also documents the Codex command: codex mcp add arxiv -- uvx arxiv-mcp-server.
3. The supported Python distribution is PyPI package arxiv-mcp-server (documented release 0.8.2); do not use npm/npx because the README warns an unrelated npm package has the same name.
4. Optionally add --from, arxiv-mcp-server[pdf], arxiv-mcp-server for PDF conversion; use the documented [pro] package extra to add semantic-search dependencies.
5. Reconnect the client and inspect tools/list. For a harmless check, use search_papers or list_papers; avoid changing topic watches during a connectivity-only check.

The maintained README states that release 0.8.2 exposes 19 tools; this is a versioned documented inventory, not an observed connection or tools/list response.
