About Power BI Consumption MCP

Microsoft-hosted Power BI Consumption MCP for querying semantic model schemas, report metadata, and data using natural-language-generated DAX.

What you can use it for

  • semantic-model metadata
  • read-only DAX query generation/execution
Connection and setup
Hosting
Vendor-hosted remote MCP service
Transport
Streamable HTTP
Endpoint
https://api.fabric.microsoft.com/v1/mcp/powerbi
Authentication
Microsoft sign-in; access is governed by tenant settings, account permissions and client OAuth.

Requirements

  • Power BI tenant admin must enable the MCP server preview setting.
  • User needs Build permission on at least one semantic model.
  • MCP client supporting remote HTTP and Microsoft authentication.

Setup steps

  1. Ask the tenant admin to enable “Users can use the Power BI Model Context Protocol server endpoint (preview)”.
  2. Add https://api.fabric.microsoft.com/v1/mcp/powerbi as a remote HTTP MCP endpoint.

Tools 4+

Microsoft names four tools in the setup guide; not confirmed against live tools/list.

  • Execute Query

Run a DAX query against a semantic model.

    01
  • Get Semantic Model Schema

    Read semantic model structure.

    02
  • Get Report Metadata

    03
  • Generate Query

Generate a query for a semantic model.

    04

This server’s available tools can vary by account, permissions, or configuration. The list shown is not its full runtime catalog.

Limitations and notes
  • Preview endpoint.
  • Tenant admin must enable it, and user needs Build permission.
  • Microsoft recommends Fabric IQ MCP as the primary semantic-model consumption server.
Original sources
  • official vendor setup

Microsoft documents the hosted endpoint, preview status, admin prerequisite, Build permission, setup and four tools.

  • official tool documentation

Microsoft remote MCP documentation lists exactly four tools: Execute Query, Get Semantic Model Schema, Get Report Metadata, and Generate Query.
