Authentication

Grafana service account token or username/password, with RBAC permissions and scopes required per tool.

Requirements

• Grafana 9.0 or later for full functionality
• uv for the documented uvx install, or Docker/binary/Helm alternative
• Grafana instance URL
• Service account token with the RBAC permissions required for selected tools

Setup steps

1. Create a Grafana service account and token with only the RBAC permissions required by the tools you plan to enable.
2. Install with uvx using the official package mcp-grafana, or choose Docker, binary, or Helm from the official setup guide.
3. Configure GRAFANA_URL and GRAFANA_SERVICE_ACCOUNT_TOKEN in the MCP client environment. For Grafana Cloud, use the stack URL.
4. Add the local stdio server to the client and reload the connection.
5. Start with read-only exploration. If desired, set --disable-write; also consider --disable-query because SQL/Influx queries can write depending on datasource permissions.

Grafana’s current official tools table enumerates all 122 stored names. Optional tool families may be disabled by default; RBAC, scopes, instance version and flags determine effective exposure.
