About Video Frames MCP

Local FFmpeg MCP that inspects video metadata, extracts individual or evenly spaced frames, runs OCR on individual frames, and clips segments.

What you can use it for

  • Read on-screen text from a reference video
  • Sample visuals from a downloaded video
  • Inspect a clip around a transition
Connection and setup
Hosting
Local Node.js MCP server
Transport
stdio
Endpoint
Local process; no hosted endpoint documented
Authentication
No account or API key is documented for local file operations.

Requirements

  • Node.js 18 or newer.
  • FFmpeg and FFprobe available on PATH.
  • A local video file; this server does not download a YouTube URL.

Setup steps

  1. Install FFmpeg and verify `ffmpeg -version`.
  2. Configure the MCP client to run `npx -y @eequaled/frames-mcp` over stdio.
  3. Give the server an absolute local file path from a downloader, then inspect metadata and sample frames; request individual frames with OCR around relevant moments.
Tools 4

Four stored tools match; requires local video and FFmpeg and does not download YouTube URLs.

  • extract_frame

Return one frame at a timestamp with OCR text.

Parameters: videoPath, outputPath (optional), timestamp (optional), frameIndex (optional)
    01
  • extract_multiple_frames

Return evenly distributed frames across a local video.

Parameters: videoPath, outputDir (optional), intervalSeconds (optional), totalFrames (optional), format (optional)
    02
  • get_video_info

Read duration, resolution, frame rate, codec, and frame count.

    Parameters: videoPath
    03
  • extract_clip

Cut and save a local video time range.

Parameters: videoPath, outputPath, startTime, endTime or duration
    04
Limitations and notes
  • Requires a separate acquisition tool such as yt-dlp for YouTube URLs.
  • The README's batch sampling is evenly spaced, so brief cuts need additional single-frame or clip inspection.
  • OCR accuracy depends on source resolution and frame selection.
